I was born in Newfoundland and spent my early years in the seaport town of Botwood. I had a normal, happy and active childhood which helped me grow into a happy, well-adjusted adult (a matter of opinion). I developed a love for music at a young age. My mother could play the piano but my father was absolutely tone deaf so I can’t say my insatiable desire was born from a home environment filled with music, but everything on the radio caught my attention. I started taking steel guitar lessons at age 10. Then a cousin came home from Toronto and taught me a few chords and I was hooked. I also began taking piano lessons but after a few months of having to give up my Saturday mornings, only to be scolded by my teacher for not practicing enough, I decided that I didn’t need this pressure so I quit! My desire to learn music only grew and with no television or video games to occupy my spare time (OK, it was long time ago!), I applied myself to learning how to play the guitar and piano. I was accomplished enough on guitar to join the church orchestra at 11 and at age 12, with my knees shaking, I sang my first song in church – “God Hath Not Promised.”
I’m not going to regale you with everything between then and now – but “life” happened and most of it was fun and exciting. Like everyone else along life’s journey, there have been the usual mountain top and deep valley experiences. I took a big detour from my Christian upbringing between my late 20’s and mid 40’s but my journey eventually took me back to my roots. I didn’t set the world on fire or win any great awards but I’m rich beyond measure in friends and life-experiences. Now here I am a senior citizen making my first CD – never too late to do something new and exciting!
After a long and satisfying banking career, I retired in 2006 to concentrate on important things like golf, divinity courses at university, recreational hockey, travel and music. Unfortunately, my golf and hockey skills have not improved. In fact, some of my so-called friends would say that the word “skills” simply does not apply here. But I thoroughly enjoy these pursuits and I do have flashes of brilliance – in my humble opinion, of course! I’m very actively involved with Community Bible Studies, an international, inter-denominational organization, and in addition to golfing trips with my “buddies,” my wife and I have enjoyed several great travel experiences, including a tour of Israel in 2012.
Life is good and God has indeed blessed me. I have been happily married to my beautiful wife, Barbara, for the past 21 years and between us we have three children and two grandchildren. I thoroughly enjoy making music and singing, especially when I sing about God’s abundant grace, endless mercy and boundless love. The songs I selected for my first CD, “He Touched Me,” embody all of these characteristics of our great and loving God. I have expressed my thanks and deep gratitude to Him in my own composition on the CD, “Thank You Jesus For Everything.” I look forward to sharing these songs with you in concerts, special music at your churches or special events as well as through your listening to the CD.
Thank you and God bless you.
